Henrik Ibsenââ¬â¢s A Dollââ¬â¢s house Essay
Henrik Ibsenââ¬â¢s A Dollââ¬â¢s house is all about womenââ¬â¢s rights. We can infer from the theme of the novel that the author Henrik Ibsen was a strong Feminist as he created characters that fought for the rights of women. The central character of A Dollââ¬â¢s house, Nora fought for the same cause. Nora attempts to become a strong individual even though she was being locked in a male dominated world. Her husband Torvaldââ¬â¢s dominating nature was the one that was preventing her from become self motivated. She appeared inexperienced, naive and vulnerable till the end when she surprised everybody by boldly leaving her husband and children to live an independent life. Noraââ¬â¢s world appeared to be so childish that the author has named it as a ââ¬Ëdollââ¬â¢s houseââ¬â¢. She appeared as an alien to the real world with no real world experience. She was even found humorous in few incidents. But we can see the same Nora being serious and trying to be superior as she says ââ¬Å"one isnââ¬â¢t without influenceâ⬠. This shows the feminist views of the character or the author. A Doll`s house speaks about womenââ¬â¢s rights. Even though Nora is constructed as immature and silly, we can see that this nature is enforced by the society around her. However her true nature was destined to be revealed later. Nora is found to be an independent woman who was restricted within the ââ¬Ëdollhouseââ¬â¢ by her husband. Her life was like that of a butterfly that is trying to get out of the cocoon to show its true colors. We can see Nora striving, throughout the play, and finally unveiling her original self. She is indeed a classical hero. She was submissive to her husband and was enthusiastic and smart. We can say that Nora was always right in her attitude as this was the best she can be towards her dominating husband. Towards the end of the play she discovered herself and took the big shocking decision to leave her husband and children for ever. The feminist ideologies of Nora were revealed in the end of the novel. She was found subordinate to her husband Torvald who believed that women are frail and can never make decision of their own. However finally Nora gets hold of her individuality and dares to take the great decision to abandon her husband and children. Noraââ¬â¢s great passion for life and her strong feministic beliefs stimulated her to take the decision of her life. She courageously broke away from the doll house that appeared as a prison for her all through these days. Nora was always under the care of someone, first with her father and then with her husband. Nora was a materialistic, impulsive and babyish. But Nora appeared as a bold woman in the final scene of the play. We can see Nora the classical hero walking out of her house in the final scene to live her life. All this makes us doubt whether she was pretending to be silly all through these days to adjust with the patriarchal oppression she was suffering from her husband Torvald. Nora finally becomes fully independent to renounce the false union of marriage and the burden of motherhood. She says ââ¬Å"Never see him again. Never. Never. Never. Never see the children again. Them too. Never. never. Oh ââ¬â the icy black water! Oh ââ¬â that bottomless ââ¬â that -! Oh, if only it were all over! Now heââ¬â¢s got it ââ¬â heââ¬â¢s reading it. Oh, no, no! Not yet! Goodbye, Torvald! Goodbye, my darlings. â⬠Nora was the upholder of women`s rights. She struggled against the selfish, stifling, oppressive and dominating attitude of her Husband Torvald and the society which he represents. Nora journey lead to her self-discovery as she fought against the exploitation of women by men. Torvald represents the orthodox society and Nora is the advocate of feminism. Torvald did not give any privilege to Nora and called her silly names throughout the play. He called her ââ¬Ësquirrelââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëlarkââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëlittle skylarkââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëlittle songbirdââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëlittle personââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëlittle womanââ¬â¢, and ââ¬Ëlittle featherheadââ¬â¢. Torvald never forgot to use the word ââ¬Ëlittleââ¬â¢ before these names. He considered her as ââ¬Ëlittleââ¬â¢. He was also very possessive and always used ââ¬Ëmyââ¬â¢ before these names. Torvald never considered Nora equal to him. He thought she is inferior to him. The feminist beliefs of Nora rise up at last and she comes to know that she has been a foolish doll in a toy-marriage and walks out of her house slamming the door behind her and surprising Torvald. Nora was just considered like any other possession of Torvald. She was not given any humane privilege. The feminist beliefs of the author hated this attitude of Torvald and encouraged Nora to break away one day from the ââ¬Ëdoll houseââ¬â¢. Nora recognizes her rights at last and is awakened. She stops pretending to be what she is not. She became a strong woman and takes control of her own destiny. Torvald considered his wife, children and status symbols and had a very narrow definition about marriage. He thinks that it is the duty of the wife to be good to her husband and children. She deems women as helpless creatures separated from reality and moral force. The author highlighted the self realization of the main character Nora and the way she becomes an example to feminist ideology. The novel thus becomes an extraordinary work in which a man portrays strong feminist ideologies. The attitude of Nora reveals the strong feminist views of the author. Nora always wanted to get out of the clutch of her husband as she says to Rank and Linde ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve the most extraordinary longing to say: ââ¬ËBloody hell! ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ She finally gets out all her social and traditional commitments and obligations as become free as a hero. She is such a classical character that our hearts are with her even though she took the pitiless decision to leave her moral husband and innocent little children. She can be called as a hero as a fought for a good cause, the freedom for the weaker sex. The position of women in the 1800ââ¬â¢s, during the time of Nora was too low. They lived as housewives with no right to vote, own property, and make any significant transactions. Nora recognized her slavery and preferred to break away and live a life with freedom. It is nothing but her courage to fight against oppression made her the most admirable stage heroine of the century. What she has done is perfectly justifiable in the light is modern ideology and culture. She was just being a model to the women of modern days. She stepped into a wider world and making her husband understands that he is not the noble person that she expected him to be. She understands that she can no longer continue as a shadow of her husband. She turned out to be a classical hero in the contemporary male dominated society that oppressed women to the core and considered them as a second-class citizen.She just initiated an awakening and made a classical turn in history. Comparison of High School and College Essay
I could go on and on about how many similarities high school and college have, but Iââ¬â¢d rather interest you in their differences. The three main differences between these two educations are homework, tests, and rules of attendance. I would personally prefer college over high school any day. In high school, homework is pretty ridiculous. Teachers would assign homework every day and not only that, but they would check it every day as well. If it wasnââ¬â¢t perfect we would get points taken off and we would have to re-do the problems we got wrong. Teachers are also unreasonably lenient in high school too. For example, the ââ¬Å"I left my paper at home, can I turn it in next class?â⬠excuse is okay in high school. This is because they will and always will. Teachers know what college is like and want to give students the benefit of the doubt as much as they can before they get crushed in college. College as you would expect, is much harder than high school responsibility wise. In my math class, homework isnââ¬â¢t even assigned, let alone checked. It is my own responsibility to do it so that I will do well on tests and quizzes. Nobody is going to check on you to make sure you are doing what you are supposed to be doing. Honestly, it almost seems that nobody cares either. Of course teachers care if you fail their class, but they only care if you tried extremely hard and worked really hard. Nine times out of ten, a student failed due to laziness and irresponsibility to get assignments into their teachers on time which is when a teacher wonââ¬â¢t care. If you do happen to get a teacher who assigns homework and checks it, you better have it done by the due date. If you donââ¬â¢t, unless you are dying, no excuse is persuasive to a teacher in college. There really is no excuse for late work in college because it is preparing you for the job world. Tests and quizzes in high school pretty much expect the teachers to give students study guides and so forth. If you miss a test or quiz in high school you can make it up in your resource time or whenever the teacher says so. If you are an idiot and decide to cheat on a high school level test you might get a warning, or you might even get a zero. In college the testing strategy and rules along with it are different. The only course that usually requires a lot from personal experience would be math. Every other course basically only has a final exam at the end of the semester and possibly a few quizzes along the way. If you miss these final exams or quizzes they are automatically zeros and you just wasted a lot of money. Another difference in college is that some tests or quizzes are online whereas in high school everything takes place in the classroom. The last major difference between tests in high school and college is that if you get caught cheating in any way at the collegiate level you wonââ¬â¢t get a zero, or a warning. You will get thrown out of the institution without a refund. This last cool difference could be the deciding factor whether you pass or fail. In high school your teacher is required to take attendance of every student in class every day. If you are late to class you must get a pass and if you donââ¬â¢t show up at all it counts as an absence on your report card. Sometimes excuses work with some teachers but that usually isnââ¬â¢t the case. However, when you reach college you will find that some professors could care less if you come to class late or donââ¬â¢t come at all. You wonââ¬â¢t be marked down as an absence or anything. This is because professors get paid regardless if you show up or not. Ideally, as you would expect, college is much different than high school. I was always the kid who turned assignments in late and every time I got away with it. Sometimes I wouldnââ¬â¢t show up to class and made up a stupid excuse for it and nobody questioned me. Now Iââ¬â¢m in college and things are very different for me. I used to hate having to do homework assignments every day and having to do them right knowing they would be checked for correction. I just never realized the importance of being forced to do them and how much it would help me learn the information. So when a professor tells me I donââ¬â¢t have to do homework and it wonââ¬â¢t be checked I listened to him and now I donââ¬â¢t know how to do the chapter we are learning in math. Now that Iââ¬â¢ve realized the importance of doing the homework instead of waiting to be asked to do it and checked I just do it so that I wonââ¬â¢t suffer on the test or quiz due to my own ignorance. Iââ¬â¢ll be okay in college as long as I remember whatââ¬â¢s important to me which am getting a job when finally getting my engineering degree. You always have to remember whatââ¬â¢s important to you because if you donââ¬â¢t then you will fall behind in life and you donââ¬â¢t want to fall behind in anything you do. Itââ¬â¢s pretty unnecessary and unneeded but either way you wonââ¬â¢t be successful. High school and college are very different in a couple senses but they are different for a reason. If you donââ¬â¢t take advantage of these reasons then they will take advantage of you. Homework, test and attendance policies are the 3 main differences between high school and college. There is more homework, more tests and stricter attendance policy in high school.

â⬠The Crucibleâ⬠is a play that was written by Arthur Miller in the 1950s. The play was originally produced in 1953 at a time where McCarthyism was at its peak. This was a time of American paranoia when Americans believed that the Russians were planning start a war with them. The Americans accused members of the society of been a communist spy for the most trivial reasons. It was a situation of hysteria. This was very similar to the situation in Salem two hundred years earlier. The people of Salem would believe anyone to be a witch even if they had very little or no evidence. Salem was governed by theocracy this meant the church ran the local government, therefore they had orthodox religious beliefs. Arthur Miller compares these two situations to show that we all should learn from past mistakes. The past events in Salem contributed to the situation in 1950s America, this shows Causation. The title reflects the play because a crucible is a container used to expose its contents to very high temperatures, this can cause impurities to rise to the surface, itââ¬â¢s metaphoric meaning is a place of severe test or trial. In the play eighteenth century Salem becomes a Crucible, Judge Danforth creates a situation in which he is trying to force the supposed witches to the surface and purify Salem. Miller uses dramatic techniques to maintain the audiencesââ¬â¢ interest the message that Miller conveys is to learn from your mistakes and not to jump to conclusions. Abigail changes the way she acts when interrogated by Hale. Abigail has previously been perceived as a dynamic and powerful individual however when Rev. Hale questions her she comes across as very desperate and paranoid. This is shown when Abigail says, ââ¬Å"I am a good girl, a proper girlâ⬠. She attempts to make herself out to be a model Puritan, Parris and Hale are manipulated but the audience knows that Abigail is no telling the truth, this is dramatic irony. The playwright Arthur Miller presents Abigail to be extremely deceptive and two-faced, as he wants the audience to dislike her. This is shown when Abigail notices an opportunity to blame Tituba for the unchristian and unlawful activities that she has committed. For instance Abigail blames Tituba for making her laugh in the middle of prayer and for waking her in the night and Abi finds herself naked. Miller does this to give an insight of the sin Tituba is not given the chance to object or justify Abigailââ¬â¢s accusations. An example of this is ââ¬Å"Mister Reverend, I never. â⬠And Hale interrupts her by saying ââ¬Å"Tituba I want you to wake this child. â⬠Reverend Hale is not interested in Titubaââ¬â¢s defence but her satanic influence. This shows that Hale does not pity Tituba he hears that which he wishes to hear. This reveals that the citizens of Salem will believe what they are told, they follow the majority. When Tituba enters the room Abigail immediately puts the blame on her. This shows that Abigail was under a lot of pressure, so much so that she transferred the blame onto the first person that entered the room. Tituba was not expecting Abigail to blame her. She shows this when the stage directions are ââ¬Å"shocked and angryâ⬠Tituba previously considered Abi to be a loyal and honest person. Tituba has misinterpreted Abigailââ¬â¢s character. Miller increases the tension as the audience sympathises with the slave since her English is bad and she is been tricked into admitting something she has not done. When Abigail mentions the word ââ¬Å"bloodâ⬠, Parris Mrs Putnam and Tituba all repeat it. This reveals that the incident that took place in the forest was not as innocent as was first thought. It shows that in fact it was a lot more sinister. The repetition of this key work creates tension since repetition creates a sense of hysteria. Miller reveals this information to increase the audienceââ¬â¢s interest. The characters that repeat the word ââ¬Å"bloodâ⬠are insecure and gullible.
